Hey {{first name | reader}},
Happy Friday! Espresso’s on and deals are popping. Today, we’ve got a flexible-booking cheat sheet, a transpacific unicorn, and a villa-with-a-pool escape (with a free night). Here’s what’s inside:

  • Award change/cancel safety nets: 7 programs that won’t punish you for being human

  • Deal alert: ANA MEX→Tokyo nonstop in business for 75k Aeroplan (space is wide open)

  • Hotel: Banyan Tree Mayakoba: private-pool villas and a 4th night free

Award change/cancel safety nets: 7 programs compared

When your plans aren’t firm, the mileage program you use can make or break the trip. I’ll be honest, I sometimes grab an award because it looks too good to miss, even if I’m not 100% sure I can go. If life or work changes, I want to switch or cancel for little or no cost and get my miles back fast. With that in mind, here are the programs that are easiest to change or cancel and that return your points without drama.

American AAdvantage: very friendly

Cancel before your first flight departs, and AA waives change/redeposit fees; miles come back, and eligible taxes are refunded. If you switch to a more expensive itinerary, you’ll be responsible for any fare/tax difference. You can cancel AA award tickets up until departure for free, which is pretty crazy, huh?

United MileagePlus: very friendly

United redeposits miles with no fee when you cancel an award. Close-in change fees are gone, too, one of the most forgiving U.S. policies. You can cancel UA award tickets up until departure for free, just like AA!

Alaska Mileage Plan: Very friendly

You can change or cancel award tickets before departure and get your miles back with no redeposit fee; it typically costs just $12.50 per ticket

Air Canada Aeroplan: Flexible, fee varies

You can cancel up to 2 hours before departure; a non-refundable fee applies based on the fare family you chose (Flex options are cheaper to change/cancel than Standard, but there are some tips and tricks about what fares to book, check them out on the Points Master program…). In general, we recommend buying the cheapest award option, even though it costs $150 CAD to cancel and $100 CAD to change. The more expensive fares cost more than $150 CAD extra, and in case you don’t need to cancel, you’ve wasted $150 CAD!

British Airways Executive Club (Avios): simple, low fixed fee

About US$55 per person to change or cancel/redeposit (or the actual taxes if lower than $55). Predictable and handy for speculative bookings. Note that you cannot cancel within 24 hours of flight departure.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club: moderate fixed fee

Expect ~£70 to change/cancel most reward seats. Miles come back fast; tax refunds can take longer. Rules vary by route/cabin, confirm at checkout.

Air France/KLM Flying Blue: reasonable fixed fee

You can change or cancel an award and get your miles back for a flat €70 per ticket (same price to change or to cancel/redeposit). That applies to regular awards and, these days, to Promo Rewards too. Just make sure you do it before departure.

Bottom line: For soft plans, AA/UA/AS are the friendliest. BA offers a cheap, predictable out. Flying Blue and Virgin are useful, just price the fees into your decision.

Deal alert: ANA MEX → NRT nonstop for 75,000 Aeroplan points (wide open space)

Spotted: ANA from Mexico City (MEX) to Tokyo Narita (NRT) in business class for 75,000 Aeroplan points + ~CA$148 one-way. It’s a nonstop 787-8 and clocks about 14h15m, a full, sleepable transpacific.

Why this is hot

  • Product: Classic ANA business: true lie-flat in a staggered layout, refined Japanese/Western meals, warm service, and solid bedding. Not “THE Room,” but consistently excellent.

  • Availability: Multiple dates are open right now (green across the calendar).

  • Cost math: With the current Aeroplan points sale, 75k points come out to roughly US$900 for the miles, plus taxes. That’s what we teach in the Points Master program, and it reduces the typical one-way cash fares of about US$3,500 - $7,000 for this 14-hour lie-flat.

Prices for this route can be very high

How to book:

  1. Search Aeroplan for MEX → NRT and grab NH179 at 75,000 pts in business.

  2. If you need miles, compare points × your effective cost + taxes to cash. Only buy if you can ticket immediately.

  3. Planning a multi-city trip? Aeroplan allows a 5,000-point stopover on a one-way, useful for Japan + another Asia city.

Aeroplan is currently running a buy-points promo, with targeted tiers up to 90% bonus, bringing the top-tier cost to about ~14 USD per 1000 points. Log in to see your offer and the end date for your account (the current window closes around late October). If you’re aiming for this ANA seat, find the award first, then buy and ticket immediately. It’s not Aeroplan’s best sale ever, but you can still save a ton of money.

ANA’s 787 Business Class

Heads-up: Purchased Aeroplan points can take a few days to post; award seats may disappear in the meantime. Ideally, have 2 or 3 dates as options.

Bottom line: Nonstop MEX→Tokyo in ANA business for 75k is a killer sweet spot. If Japan’s on your 2026 radar, this is your sign.

Hotel deal: Banyan Tree Mayakoba: villas with private pools… and a 4th night free

Craving space and quiet on the Riviera Maya? Banyan Tree Mayakoba nails that feeling, with freestanding villas with private pools, indoor-outdoor baths, lantern-lit paths through the mangroves, and a calm beach inside the Mayakoba complex. I love that you can do the whole “hide away” thing without sacrificing good food or a proper spa day: Saffron for Thai, Sands on the beach, the boat-access HAAB experience, and the Banyan Tree Spa when you’re ready to slow down for real.

The offer: 4th night free on select dates, stay four consecutive nights, pay for three. That’s an effective 25% off before taxes/fees.

Why it works: You get a private villa (and your own pool) without giving up the beach, bikes, and lagoon calm Mayakoba is known for. Great for couples who want downtime and excellent food, or families who need plenty of room to relax.

Pro tip: If you reserve through us, we can book the 4th-night-free rate for your dates and typically add VIP-style perks (daily breakfast for two, resort credit, upgrade priority, subject to availability) at the same flexible rate.

That’s it for today. Have a great weekend and happy plotting!

Catch you in the clouds,

Tomi
